The Entire Safe Withdrawal Rate Series: NOT to be published on TikTok! Happy April Fool’s Day!

April 1, 2021 – The readers have spoken and I listened! A lot of folks have been asking for an easier way to digest the Safe Withdrawal Rate research on my site. It has now grown to 44 parts and even with the new landing page, it must still seem like a daunting task to navigate all the different facets of retirement planning. So, I’ve thought long and hard about a more accessible method to convey the complicated subject matter of advanced retirement withdrawal strategies.

I can now announce that I’ve decided to – get ready for this – publish the entire Safe Withdrawal Rate Series on TikTok! I will split up the series, 44 posts and 100,000+ words so far into easy-to-digest bits and pieces. Each post in the Series will be made up of between 5 to 20 TikTok videos, each around 45 to 60 seconds long. I’ll kill two birds with one stone, 1) venture into new markets and meet new people in this exciting new medium, and 2) provide better access to my research for the folks with attention-span challenges. These days, who wants to read 5,000-word blog posts with charts and tables anymore, right?

If you thought this was a big announcement, wait for the even bigger news. Instead of going this major step all by myself, I’ve decided to partner up with one of the top-100 TikTok content creators! So, who is that new partner, you may ask? It’s … drumroll …

The Dancing TikTok nurses of Portland General Hospital!!!

They were one of the greatest and most beloved and most-watched internet sensations of 2020!

Well, it turns out that the whole pandemic dance routine fad is waning a little bit in 2021 and with all the extra time on their hands now, they were ecstatic to help me background-dance some of the SWR posts. All professionally put together with the help of the world-class choreographers at the Portland Ballet! For example, in Part 8, essentially the mathematical appendix, it took some heavy lifting to convey the messy and convoluted formulas. But with the magic of dance, the most complicated formulas will make sense to even the most mathematically-challenged readers!

The legacy SWR series posts will go online at TikTok at a rate of about 2-3 per week in the coming months. We’ll also soon have a brand-new post:

Part 45 – How to sleep well in retirement with a 100% GameStop portfolio…

…and that was a lot of fun to produce! The old-technology blog post and the new-medium TikTok version of this exciting post will be released on the same day in just a few short weeks! Stay tuned and watch this space for updates later this month!

Hope you enjoyed today’s post! Please leave your comments and suggestions in the space below!

  1. Totally fell for that hahaha, was thinking wow, so innovative, I’m going to have to get Tik Tok and learn the SWR dance…

  2. Very drove. Thankfully I’ve been awake for a few hours already so didn’t fall for it.

  3. Isn’t tik tok owned by Chinese company, dont trust or like apps like facebook, cloud storage, twiter, instagram, that is just me. Even with Virus software.

  4. Holy crap, you got me for a second. I thought “is he going nuts now?!?’
But when I clicked on the link to come to your blog, it dawned on me about the April Fools.

I woke up today to find all drawers in my kitchen changed!! Contents of one were put in a different one and then other moved somewhere else. Luckily my teen left “April Fools” post note inside…I was about to go upstairs and wake her up because I didn’t like ‘her new organization’. When I saw the note, it cracked me up LOL

  5. Karsten…aka Big Ern…I have been reading many of your older posts. My wife is from the Philippines, also. I sent you a message from the message template about a week ago, but maybe you did not get it ? I had asked you some questions about your 2011 Options Put trading ? If I need to send it again…I can. Thanks in advance for all your hard work and mentoring…it is much appreciated.
